• 1994 - Tobacco Company CEOs Testify Before Congress

In 1994, United States Congressman Harry Waxman held a famous series of Congressional hearings. The presidents and CEOs of the seven largest American tobacco companies were subpoenaed to testify before Waxman's committee. On April 14, 1994, after more than six hours of sharp questioning by members of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health and the Environment, the seven CEOs steadfastly refused to budge under stringent questioning that they knew cigarettes were addictive. Each stated under oath that they did not believe nicotine was addictive. Within months, a perjury investigation was initiated by the Department of Justice. Ultimately, the Department of Justice claimed it did not have enough evidence to prosecute for perjury because the CEOs testified under oath that they b...

Gaza smokers say the costs of cigarettes and tobacco have increased by more than 200 percent - since Egypt launched a campaign against militants in northern Sinai. Egyptian troops have begun demolishing homes along the country's border with the Gaza Strip, as they seek to close hundreds of smuggling tunnels. A dramatic explosion carried out by the Egyptian army destroys this two storey house in the area of the Rafah border. The demolition campaign began after an October assault on a checkpoint near Rafah killed 31 soldiers, the deadliest attack on Egypt's army in modern history. There has been no claim of responsibility yet for the attack. Palestinians had been using tunnels to smuggle many kinds of goods especially cigarettes and tobacco. But now - amid the army operation - prices are are said to have increased by at least 200 percent. Smoker Naser Abu Shdadeh says continuing conflict has caused him to smoke more. "We are suffering from the siege and because of what we see, such as wars and other. My house was destroyed during the war, after that I started smoking three packs instead of one pack of cigarettes," he says. "I used to spend 17 shekels (4.30 US dollars) on buying three packs but today a price of one pack of cigarettes has become between 25 to 27 shekels (seven US dollars) and I am unable to buy it," he says. Smoker Hamada Malakah adds: "After the explosion, which happened in Egypt, all prices have risen. I used to buy a packet of molasses tobacco from eight shekels (two US dollars) but now its price has become between 30-40 shekels (8-10 US dollars)." It is not just smokers who are suffering, businesses are also feeling the effect of rising prices. Mohammad Abd al-Mo'ti is a cafe owner in Gaza city. The high prices for the flavoured hookah tobacco is putting off customers. "The higher prices affects us as cafe owners. When we buy a kilo of flavoured hookah tobacco for 350 shekels (90 US dollars), we have to raise the price of hookah but this will affect the turnout and people will not come," he says. The situation is even worse for smokers who want foreign ready-rolled packets of cigarettes, like Marlboro. Sometimes a carton of these can reach up to 1,300 US dollars according to stockists. Naser Al-Sersi is a tobacco shop owner, he says: "Today the price of a carton of cigarettes rose from 500 to 1,300 (US dollars). There is a difference of about 50 shekels in the price of each box of cigarettes. If the explosion had not happened and the tunnels did not close, the prices would remain as before. It is the citizen who just pays the cost." On the streets of Gaza City, Mohammad Abu Jarad says: "The price of cigarettes has remained high. We will be forced to smoke the Arabic tobacco. In our current situation we are suffering from the siege, wars and a bad economic and political situation and every day the situation is getting worse. Because those who did not previously smoke became smokers." (15 Nov 2017) LEADIN: Cigarettes and molasses tobacco are flowing into the Gaza Strip legally for the first time in a decade. STORYLINE: This tobacco shop is going to do more business from now on. Cigarettes, which are hugely popular in Gaza, are now back at an affordable price. And it has been a long time coming. Shipments have been arriving legally for the first time in a decade, and tobacconists are delighted. The shipments are now overseen by the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, which assumed control of Gaza's only commercial crossing with Israel earlier this month from Hamas. Since taking over Gaza in 2007, Hamas has imported tobacco products through a network of underground smuggling tunnels between Gaza and Egypt. This enabled Hamas to control the price, raising them threefold. Now, the cigarettes are coming through the Israeli-controlled crossing point without the surcharges Hamas used to collect. Tobacco store owners say they prefer selling products imported through the legal crossing points because they are cleaner, of better quality and the prices are subjected to the PA's regulations. "It's a fixed price for everyone which makes it easier for us with customers," says tobacco shop owner Kamal Awad. Thirty-five brands of cigarettes and molasses tobacco, used for smoking hookahs in the many Gaza cafes, are now entering Gaza legitimately. And, crucially for the tobacco connoisseur, the quality is far better. "Smokers can feel the difference in taste between the Egyptian cigarettes and the ones that turned up yesterday. Massive difference in quality and not much difference in price," says Salah Talatiney. Gaza residents, who endured the Israeli-Egyptian blockade to isolate Hamas, expect prices of all imported commodities to go down as additional tariffs and taxes imposed by Hamas are cancelled. "Now the quality will be controlled and the bad products or bad quality will not be used and will be sent back to the source. The second thing is the prices will not be subjected to a monopoly or those in the black market, it will be controlled by law or customs law," says local man Ahmad Abu Meileq. Under a deal signed last month in Cairo, the militant Hamas group has begun handing over control in Gaza to the PA in a bid to end a decade of Palestinian split. Placing the viewer in the perspective of the white tourist family, a historically preserved Southern mansion is investigated and the past system of plantation owners and slaves is re-created. The homes of the past are contrasted with the homes of the current tenant farmers and landlords. At the end, as the viewer observes a polite barbecue party of well-dressed white people as the voiceover narrates: "Today, if we visit a social gathering in the south, we'll see some of these things. The gentle manners and courtesy. The separation of society into distinct groups. And the relationship of that society to the land, which supplies its wealth. These are some of the things the plantation system has contributed to southern life.".' Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantation_economy Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ A plantation economy is an economy based on agricultural mass production, usually of a few commodity crops grown on large farms called plantations. Plantation economies rely on the export of cash crops as a source of income. Prominent plantation crops included cotton, rubber, sugar cane, tobacco, figs, rice, kapok, sisal, and species in the genus Indigofera, used to produce indigo dye. The longer a crop's harvest period, the more efficient plantations become. Economies of scale are also achieved when the distance to market is long. Plantation crops usually need processing immediately after harvesting. Sugarcane, tea, sisal, and palm oil are most suited to plantations, while coconuts, rubber, and cotton are suitable to a lesser extent... In the Thirteen Colonies, plantations were concentrated in the South. These colonies included Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. They had good soil and almost year-round growing seasons, ideal for crops such as rice and tobacco. The existence of many waterways in the region made transportation easier. Each colony specialized in one or two crops, with Virginia standing out in tobacco production... Planters embraced the use of slaves mainly because indentured labor became expensive. Some indentured servants were also leaving to start their own farms as land was widely available. Colonists tried to use Native Americans for labor, but they were susceptible to European diseases and died in large numbers. The plantation owners then turned to enslaved Africans for labor. In 1665, there were fewer than 500 Africans in Virginia but by 1750, 85 percent of the 235,000 slaves lived in the Southern colonies, Virginia included. Africans made up 40 percent of the South’s population. According to the 1840 United States Census, one out of every four families in Virginia owned slaves. There were over 100 plantation owners who owned over 100 slaves. - Number of slaves in the Lower South: 2,312,352 (47% of total population). - Number of slaves in the Upper South: 1,208,758 (9% of total population). - Number of slaves in the Border States: 432,586 (13% of total population). Fewer than one-third of Southern families owned slaves at the peak of slavery prior to the Civil War. In Mississippi and South Carolina the figure approached one half. The total number of slave owners was 385,000 (including, in Louisiana, some free African Americans), amounting to approximately 3.8% of the Southern and Border states population. On a plantation with more than 100 slaves, the capital value of the slaves was greater than the capital value of the land and farming implements...
